Day School Scientists Solve Israel's Problems

Israel may not be prepared to wash its dirty laundry in public, but a native day school has some ideas for cleaning up the wastewater.

With the height of the Sea of Galilee — Israel’s serious freshwater source — steadily declining, a distinguished science competition there is this year asking for new ways to healing washing machines’ “gray water.” A greater deliver of safely recycled water that is fit for drinking or watering crops means less on request on the Kinneret, as the Sea of Galilee is known in Israel.

An eight-critic team from the Rav Teitz Mesivta Academy, part of the Jewish Enlightening Center in Elizabeth, N.J., recently was named one of two American semifinalists in the Gildor Throw for Excellence in Science, and will compete in the final spherical of the international competition in Jerusalem in early July.

The annual Israeli match, funded by the Colorado-based Catherine and Ephraim Gildor Setting up, is under the auspices of Israel’s Society for Goodness through Education. It was expanded three years ago, with the support of the Gruss Origination’s Center for Initiatives in Jewish Upbringing, to include Jewish schools in the United States.
