Q: I upstanding saw an infomercial for a car accessory called the CarMD. According to what I saw this seems to be a benediction — telling you everything you’d need to know to thrive sure your car is running well and is reliable. Is this for real? If it indeed does what they say, it seems like a miracle that’s been long in coming.
A: This is an captivating gadget indeed. Growing up, I recall my mom was fond of saying: “Find the well-proportioned and praise it,” and I’m happy to do that here, followed by a few caveats.
This $100 aid is essentially a diagnostic code/monitor reader with USB connectivity to a very well-executed consumer website and technical support team. Code readers (starting about $30) seize information from a 1996 or newer vehicle’s OBD-II evidence link connector and indicate stored diagnostic difficulty codes (DTCs), which are highly useful in diagnosing mechanism performance and emissions problems. Better code readers and budget-priced scan tools ($75 and up) typically present additional information such as monitor (system test) station, limited sensor and system data, and the ability to strike out codes.
